Former Giants hurler embarks on 7th season as part of SF coaching staff
in 2009, again filling role as clubs bullpen coach
2003-08has assisted pitching coach Dave
Righetti during 1st 6 seasons as big league coachduring that span, his bullpen charges have
ranked among NL relief corps leaders for wins (4th - 162) and saves (5th - 250)SF bullpen also
ranks 4th by stranding 30.2% of ML-high 1,826 inherited runners (1,274 left on basepaths)
Playing Career
Enjoyed successful 13-year career as ML pitcher, culminating in 6-year stay in
San Francisco that saw him become one of clubs most popular and inspirational playersrighthander
posted lifetime 99-93 mark with save and 4.56 ERA in 345 games (275 starts) for Montreal
(1989-92), Kansas City (1993), Florida (1994-95) and Giants (1996-2001)notched double-digit
victories in 4 of 6 SF campaigns (1996-98 and 2000), logging 58-45 mark with 4.71 ERA in 175
games (147 starts) in Giants uniformalso reached 10-win plateau with Montreal in 1992made
112 starts for Giants from 1996-99, with only John Burkett (157) making more starts for SF during
1990swas 1st Giant pitcher to reach double digits in wins for 3 straight seasons (1996-98)
since Burkett did it 4 consecutive years (1990-93)pitched 9-inning no-hitter July 26, 1991 at Los
Angeles while with Montreal, but gave up 2 hits in 10thoriginally came to SF after signing as
free agent at end of 1996 Spring Training and emerged as clubs winningest pitcher that season
was voted by his Giants teammates, coaches and training staff as co-winner (with Benito Santiago)
of 2001 Willie Mac Award, given to most inspirational player on team
A Giant in the Community
Has been very involved, along with late wife Lori, with California
Organ Donor Network, working with that organization and Stanford Medical Center in raising
awareness of need for organ and tissue donorsLori and Mark also created Step to the Plate
Foundation, which helps families of transplant recipientshas hosted Mark Gardner Invitational
Golf Tournament since 1993 to raise funds for Fresno area charities, along with Step to the
Plate Foundationdonates money to Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundationsupports
Californias Responsible Fatherhood Campaign with special visits and other workhas joined
children at Make-a-Wish Foundations reception at AT&T Parkhas spoken to youth at Little
League Day each of last 4 years at AT&T Park, while also attending San Francisco AAA High
School championship game held at ballparkhas made multiple trips to Yountville, CA to visit
veterans homehas lent time to Giants Community Fund charity golf outingshas participated
in last 3 Giants Challenger Clinics, teaching baseball basics to disabled childrenwas spokesperson
for MLBs 2005 Pitch, Hit and Run programdonated experience package to Giants on-line
auction that raised funds for vicitims of 2004s Indian Ocean Tsunamiwas highly active in
Genentechs Strike Out Cancer program in 2004, doing radio and television interviews, along with

Graduated from Clovis (CA) High Schoolattended Fresno (CA) City College and
