Distance Learning with AT&T Park

The San Francisco Giants is a Major League Baseball Team with a long and storied history. Their home, AT&T Park, has been called "baseball's perfect address".

Since opening in 2000 the ballpark has become known as a landmark in a city of landmarks. It offers a unique and virtually unlimited array of creative options for education.

Under the direction of our tour department, AT&T Park will be introducing an interactive distance learning program. Utilizing videoconference technology, this innovative concept enables schools to bring a variety of educational experiences to their students without having to leave the classroom. Using the internet, classrooms connect with content providers thousands of miles away.

The Baseball Hall of Fame was among the pioneers in this field. Following their lead, and in conjunction with AT&T and the Contra Costa County Office of Education, we have created "Giants Geometry". This math based lesson will use the ballpark as a backdrop for students in grades 5-8 to explore and identify the many important shapes that were needed to build AT&T Park.

We anticipate adding a full slate of presentations to our line-up, and soon kids from K-12 across the country will be able to visit 24 Willie Mays Plaza no matter where they are from. For more information please email distancelearning@attpark.com.

LESSONS

Giants Geometry: The shape of the game

Grade Levels: 3rd - 8th
Distance Learning Program length - 45 minutes to 1 hour
Available Tuesdays and Thursdays by request

From little league to the major leagues, from colonial times to the twenty-first century, baseball holds a special place in American life. Students will gain a greater understanding of why baseball is considered our National Pastime and utilize the Giants ballpark to identify and investigate the many shapes that make up the game This educational program begins with a video that takes students inside AT&T Park to learn about the park's history, see unique footage of its construction, and experience the excitement of being at a Giants game. They will explore the origins and evolution of home plate as well as work through an appropriate mathematical calculation for the grade level. They will also see how two Junior Giants on a field trip discovered how home plate got its present shape. Lastly the students will participate in a hands-on activity illustrating the importance triangles play in the structure of the ballpark. This program is focused to help students recognize and apply geometric ideas and relationships in everyday life. The cost for a single connection is $200.00 with a maximum of 30 to 40 students for optimum interactivity. A lesson packet will be sent upon confirmation of a reservation.

*The program aligns to both national and state mathematical standards for geometry.

Team Behind the Team

Grade Levels: 9th - University
Distance Learning Program length - 45 minutes to 1 hour
Available upon request

Have you ever wondered about all the different people that support a Major League baseball team? Or given any thought to what goes on in a ballpark before the team can take the field? The Giants employ up to 1,500 people on a game day, and the season doesn't end with the World Series. There are close to 200 people who work all year round to keep the organization going.

Students will view a short introductory video of AT&T Park followed by a brief background of some of the various departments that comprise the organization. (This information can be customized to include areas of specific interest to the audience.)The teacher, or facilitator, will receive a department description sheet at the time the lesson is reserved. At least two weeks before the connection date the teacher can submit a list of the top three departments that are of most interest to the class. On the day of the connection a guest speaker from one of the requested departments will then tell of the experience and educational background that contributed to their current role with the Giants. They will also touch on their day to day responsibilities. A question and answer period will conclude the guest speakers' presentation.

This program is focused to help students investigate career paths, identify necessary educational requirements needed to enter the sports industry, explore various sports related careers and engage students in a discussion about careers that would interest them.

The cost for a single connection is $150.00 with a maximum of 30 to 40 students for optimum interactivity. A lesson packet will be sent upon confirmation of a reservation.

TOURS

If you are a local school that does not have access to videoconference equipment, but would love to have your class take part in a "distance learning" lesson, then please consider coming in person to take private tour of the park and participate in the lesson on-site. We will still provide the teacher with a lesson packet to help prepare the students for their visit. We will also have worksheets and the hands-on activity materials for each student.
