Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez left the team prior to Monday's 5-1 loss to the Tigers in Detroit to catch a flight to Southern California for the birth of his daughter with wife Lucia. Leah Gonzalez, born Monday night, is the couple's first child.

Chen throws from full mound, reports no issues

Father-to-be Gonzalez sharp as O's trim East deficit
Three days before his wife is scheduled to give birth, Miguel Gonzalez turned in a strong 6 1/3-inning start as the Orioles beat the Red Sox, 6-3, on Sunday afternoon at Camden Yards. Chris Davis hit his Major League-leading 23rd homer, a two-run shot that was also the 100th of his career.

Scherzer aims to be first Tigers starter to go 10-0
No Tigers starter in the team's 112-year history has started a season 10-0. Right-hander Max Scherzer will have an opportunity to change that when he takes the mound against right-hander Jake Arrieta and the Orioles in the series opener Monday night at Comerica Park.

Wieters wins stolen-base showdown with Ellsbury
The fifth inning of Thursday night's win over the Red Sox featured a top-notch matchup. Tommy Hunter came on to pitch against Shane Victorino, but the matchup that caused Buck Showalter to marvel was catcher Matt Wieters vs. stolen-base threat Jacoby Ellsbury. Ellsbury took off for second, and Wieters pegged the speedster with a near-perfect throw.
