Giants considering extra righty in bullpen
LOS ANGELES -- Though manager Bruce Bochy remained mum on whether his Division Series pitching staff will consist of 11 or 12 Giants, he did toss out a few morsels of information.Bochy said that if the Giants settle on a larger staff for their best-of-five showdown against the Cincinnati Reds, the 12th man will be a right-hander. Cincinnati's everyday lineup features only two left-handed batters, though both are significant performers -- Joey Votto, the National League's Most Valuable Player in 2010, and Jay Bruce, a two-time All-Star. If the Giants stick with an 11-man contingent, as they did throughout the 2010 postseason, Bochy said that a right-handed starter can be used out of the bullpen early in the series. Bochy stated the obvious by announcing that left-handers Jeremy Affeldt, Javier Lopez and Jose Mijares will be on the Division Series roster. Leading candidates for the additional right-handed spot, if one is created, are George Kontos and Guillermo Mota. Kontos struck out Matt Kemp to leave the potential tying run on third base in Tuesday night's seventh inning; earlier in that inning, Mota retired two batters but yielded a double, triple and a homer. "I believe you go with your guys who are throwing the best," Bochy said. Bochy divulged nothing about the sequence of Division Series starters beyond Game 1 starter Matt Cain, though it's difficult to fathom anybody but Madison Bumgarner starting Game 2. With the Reds providing the opposition, the Giants' braintrust might think twice of starting Barry Zito, despite his recent success. The Giants have won the last 11 games Zito has started, but he's 0-2 with a 6.10 ERA in six career outings at Cincinnati's Great American Ball Park.
