Giants sign Edgar Gonzalez to Minors deal
By Chris Haft / MLB.com
SAN FRANCISCO -- Adding organizational depth to their infield, the Giants signed Edgar Gonzalez, the brother of slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, to a Minor League contract. Edgar Gonzalez's deal does not include an invitation to Major League camp, though the 32-year-old received considerable playing time with San Diego in 2008-09. A right-handed batter, Gonzalez hit .274 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs in 111 games for the Padres in 2008 before hitting .216 with four homers and 18 RBIs in 82 games in 2009. He went 0-for-2 as a middle-inning replacement when San Francisco's Jonathan Sanchez no-hit the Padres on July 10, 2009. Primarily a third baseman in the Minors and a second baseman in the Majors during his 11-year professional career, Gonzalez spent last season with the Yomiuri Giants of the Japanese Central League, hitting .263 with 12 homers and 44 RBIs in 100 games.
