Martinez likely to start Tuesday's game
SAN FRANCISCO -- As of Sunday, right-hander Joe Martinez is in line to start Tuesday against Baltimore, but Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Martinez still will be available out of the bullpen the next two days, if needed.Martinez, 27, has a 5-2 record and 3.07 ERA in 11 starts at Triple-A Fresno this season. He started five games for the Giants in 2009, going 2-2 with a 7.61 ERA. He also posted a 1-0 record and 7.11 ERA in four relief appearances last season. Martinez was recalled Friday when right-handed starter Todd Wellemeyer was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right quad strain. Bochy said the reason Martinez was recalled, rather than highly touted prospect Madison Bumgarner, was because Martinez was scheduled to throw Friday. Bochy also said Bumgarner's recent ejection and suspension did not factor in the decision.
Sandoval gets first start batting second
SAN FRANCISCO -- With Freddy Sanchez getting the day off Sunday, Giants manager Bruce Bochy opted to bat Pablo Sandoval second in the Giants' batting order.Infielder Matt Downs started at second base in place of Sanchez, batting eighth. "Downs just hasn't gotten to play a lot, so I decided we'd give Pablo the extra at-bat," Bochy said. "A lot of the times you like to keep the order the same, but this allows me to put Bengie [Molina] into the seven-hole, and Downs can run so we can do some things with him in the eighth-hole." Sandoval has recently dropped in the order, hitting seventh twice and eighth once, but went 1-for-3 with a home run Saturday. Sunday marked Sandoval's first time starting a game hitting second in the lineup.
