Posey to play in Arizona Fall League

Martinez will join Giants catching prospect with Scottsdale

SAN FRANCISCO -- Buster Posey, the Giants' leading position-player prospect, will continue his baseball education by playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions in the Arizona Fall League.

This will mark the catcher's second active offseason in a row. Last year, Posey played for the Waikiki Beach Boys in Hawaii Winter Baseball.

Posey, the Giants' first-round selection in last year's First-Year Player Draft, entered Tuesday batting .295 with four home runs and 16 RBIs in 29 games for the Giants' Triple-A Fresno affiliate. He also had compiled a .382 on-base percentage and a .505 slugging percentage.

Earlier this season, Posey hit .326 with 13 homers, 23 doubles and 58 RBIs in 80 games for high-Class A San Jose. He garnished those numbers with a .428 on-base percentage and a .540 slugging percentage.

Posey will be joined on the Scorpions squad by right-hander Joe Martinez, currently the Giants' No. 5 starter. Martinez, who missed much of the regular season after a line drive struck him in the head on April 9, assumed that the Giants would try to help him gain the experience he lost.

"I had a feeling they were going to do something because I missed some time," said Martinez, who's 3-1 with a 5.73 ERA in six appearances (four starts).

The 18th annual Arizona Fall League season begins on Oct. 13 and runs through Nov. 19 with the Rising Stars game on Nov. 7 and the championship game set for Nov. 21. Every game can be followed live on Gameday on MLB.com and MLBFallBall.com.
