Giants trim five from spring camp

Phelps could return after shoulder heals; Jennings out for season

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Making their first mass roster moves of the spring Monday, the Giants optioned left-hander Pat Misch to Triple-A Fresno and reassigned right-handers Ramon Ortiz and Ronald Ray, catcher Todd Jennings and first baseman-outfielder Josh Phelps to Minor League camp.

Manager Bruce Bochy said that Phelps could return to Major League camp once he overcomes an injured shoulder and plays in some Minor League exhibitions or camp intrasquad games. Phelps, who entered camp as a long shot to claim a reserve role, was 0-for-8 in four Cactus League games.

Misch, the only player in the group who was on the 40-man roster, is 0-7 with a 5.00 ERA in 34 appearances (including 11 starts) spanning parts of three seasons with the Giants. He and Ortiz had outside chances to claim a long relief role on the Opening Day roster but recorded ERAs of 21.00 and 19.29, respectively, in three Cactus League appearances apiece. Ray had a 13.50 ERA in four outings.

Jennings, a member of the Giants organization since 2003, recently underwent season-ending elbow surgery.

The moves left 49 players remaining on the spring roster.
