Giants acquire Franklin and Estrella from Milwaukee for 2 minor leaguers
tickets for any Major League Baseball game
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- In a move to bolster their pitching staff, the San Francisco Giants acquired left-handed pitcher Wayne Franklin and right-handed pitcher Leo Estrella from Milwaukee in exchange for minor league right-handed pitchers Carlos Villanueva and Glenn Woolard, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today.

Franklin, who turned 30 on March 9th, went 10-13 with a 5.50 ERA in 36 games (34 starts) for the Brewers during his first full season in the big leagues in 2003. The 6-2, 204-pound hurler tied All-Star Ben Sheets for the team lead in starts, while finishing second with 192.0 innings. The southpaw has spent parts of four seasons in the majors, breaking in with Houston in 2000. In 76 big league contests (38 starts), he owns a 12-14 lifetime ledger with a 5.29 ERA. Originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 1996 First Year Player Draft, he was selected by the Astros in the 1998 minor league Rule V draft before going to Milwaukee as the player to be named later in the Mark Loretta trade.

Estrella, a 29-year-old Dominican Republic native, led the Milwaukee bullpen with seven victories last season while tying for second with 58 relief appearances. Despite not joining the big league club until April 29, the 6-1, 188-pound hurler fashioned a 7-3 mark with three saves and a 4.36 ERA. Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Mets in 1993, he kept 73.9% (17-of-23) inherited runners from scoring in 2003. The 11-year professional has seen big league action with Toronto (2000) and Milwaukee (2003), going 7-3 with three saves and a 5.79 ERA in 60 relief appearances.

Villanueva, a 20-year-old Dominican Republic native, enters his third professional season. After being signed as a non-drafted free agent by the Giants in March, 2002, he spent each of the last two campaigns with the club's entry in the Arizona Rookie League. He owns a 7-6 lifetime ledger with three saves and a 2.28 ERA in 31 appearances (10 starts).

Woolard, who was the Giants' 10th round selection in the 2002 First Year Draft, went 8-9 with a 3.44 in 26 games (25 starts) for single-A Hagerstown last season. The 23-year-old Lancaster, PA native has fashioned a 11-11 mark with a 3.28 ERA in 43 minor league contests (36 starts) over two seasons.
