Tejada, Thomas share American League Pepsi Player of the Week

Oakland Athletics shortstop Miguel Tejada and Chicago White Sox designated hitter Frank Thomas have been named American League Pepsi Co-Players of the Week for the period of August 18-24.

Tejada, who batted .462 (12-for-26) with three home runs and eight RBI in six games, paced the AL in slugging (1.000) and doubles (five) last week and tied for the League lead with eight runs en route to his second career weekly award. The 2002 AL MVP closed the week with five straight multi-hit games, including a 4-for-6 day with a grand slam in a win at Toronto on Sunday.

Thomas led the Majors last week with six home runs, 12 RBI and 27 total bases. He batted .321 (9-for-28) with eight runs as the AL Central-leading White Sox won six out of seven. The two-time AL MVP had a pair of multi-homer efforts en route to his 13th career weekly award, including last Monday against Anaheim at U.S. Cellular Field. In the seventh inning of that game, he broke up Jarrod Washburn's shutout with a game-tying two-run blast and then hit a two-run walk-off shot in the ninth.

Other candidates were Anaheim's Adam Riggs (.417, 8 R, 3 HR, 4 RBI); Cleveland's Casey Blake (.440, 2 HR, 8 RBI) and Jody Gerut (.500, 2 RBI); Kansas City's Joe Randa (AL-best .519, 6 RBI); Jorge Posada (.444, 3 HR, 7 RBI) of the New York Yankees; and Oakland's Ramon Hernandez (.421, 2 HR, 8 RBI).

Pitchers on the ballot were Minnesota's Johan Santana (2-0, 1.93 ERA, 14.0 IP, AL-high 20 SO); and John Thomson (2-0, 2.12 ERA, AL-high 17.0 IP) and R.A. Dickey (1-0, 10.0 IP, 0 R) of the Texas Rangers. Dickey recorded his first Major League save last Monday and his first Major League shutout on Wednesday. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it marked the shortest span between those two feats since 1969, when the save became an official statistic.

Tejada and Thomas will each receive a Tourneau luxury Swiss timepiece as AL Pepsi Co-Players of the Week.
