CINCINNATI -- The Reds announced Sunday that left-handed pitcher David Holmberg would be called up to start the second game of a day-night doubleheader vs. the Cubs on Tuesday.
Holmberg was pulled from Friday's game vs. Indianapolis after 3 2/3 scoreless innings with three hits, one walk and four strikeouts. He is 0-4 with a 5.28 ERA in 10 starts overall, but has a 1.71 ERA in five games since returning from the disabled list on June 11.
The Reds acquired Holmberg from Arizona in a three-way offseason trade that sent catcher Ryan Hanigan to Tampa Bay.
Ace Johnny Cueto is expected to start Game 1 on Tuesday vs. Chicago.
Hamstring keeps Chapman out of game
CINCINNATI -- When the bullpen door opened in the ninth inning for a save situation vs. the Brewers on Sunday, it was Jonathan Broxton who emerged for the Reds and not closer Aroldis Chapman.
After the 4-2 win, where Broxton retired the side in order to end the game, manager Bryan Price revealed that Chapman was not available.
"He was out in the outfield and had a little bit of a tweak of the hamstring and we wanted to stay away from him today. And we hope he'll be ready to go [Monday]," Price said.
Broxton collected his sixth save of the season and his first since April 29 vs. the Cubs. Chapman is 17 for 19 in save chances and has a 2.55 ERA in 24 appearances. He earned a save in Friday's game, also a 4-2 victory for Cincinnati over Milwaukee.
Pena placed on paternity list after birth of daughter
CINCINNATI -- The Reds placed catcher Brayan Pena on the paternity list on Sunday following the birth of his daughter Isabella.
"We knew that was happening. We did not know exactly when. I got a couple of text messages very early this morning announcing that [Pena's wife] had gone into labor," manager Bryan Price said. "So he is making his way down to Florida to be with his family."
Catcher Tucker Barnhart was recalled from Triple-A Louisville. It's Barnhart's third stint with Cincinnati this season. His two prior stints with the club came while Devin Mesoraco was on the disabled list, first from Opening Day to April 6, and again from April 26 to May 17.
With the Reds this season, Barnhart is batting .107 (3-for-28) with a home run. In 47 games with Louisville, he batted .227 with eight doubles, three triples, a home run and 18 RBIs.
Looking to stay fresh, Votto gets day off
CINCINNATI -- First baseman Joey Votto was not in the lineup for the Reds' series finale against the Brewers on Sunday afternoon.
"For Joey, it's just a day off," manager Bryan Price said. "We're trying to be conscientious of the fact that he is playing at well below 100 percent right now and trying to keep him as healthy as we can under the circumstances, which is challenging. He's got some challenges, physically. I just thought it was a good idea to give him a day off today."
Sunday marked the third time Votto was not in the starting lineup since returning from a left quad strain on June 10. Entering Sunday, he's batting .255 with 16 doubles, six home runs and 23 RBIs. Since returning from the injury, he's batting .250 (21-for-84) with eight doubles, no homers and 11 RBIs. He hasn't had a multi-hit game since going 2-for-4 with a double against the Blue Jays on June 21.
"We knew the process when we initially put Joey on the disabled list that when we got him back, we weren't going to be able to get him to 100 percent over the course of the regular season," Price said. "We decided to do some strengthening exercises and really work on getting the inflammation and a lot of the soreness out of there. We accomplished that to a certain degree.
"Some days are better than others. This was my decision today not to play, though I stay in contact with Joey on how he's feeling. He didn't ask to come out. I just thought it was a good day to give him a breather and reassess and get ready for tomorrow."
