RHP Chris Martin selected to Major League roster, RHP Chad Bettis optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs
LHP Brett Anderson transferred from 15-day DL to 60-day DL
LOS ANGELES -- The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club has selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Chris Martin from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room on the active roster for Martin, the Rockies have optioned right-handed pitcher Chad Bettis to Triple-A Colorado Springs. Additionally, to make room on the 40-man roster for Martin, the Rockies have transferred left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson (fractured left index finger) from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL. Martin (#47) will be available for the Rockies vs. Dodgers game at Dodger Stadium tonight (8:10 p.m. MDT).
Martin, 27, will be making his Major League debut with his first appearance. The 6-foot-7 right-hander was acquired by Colorado, along with left-handed pitcher Franklin Morales, from Boston in exchange for infielder Jonathan Herrera on December 18, 2013. Martin began 2014 at Triple-A, where he went 0-1 with 3 saves, an 8.22 ERA (7.2 ip, 7 er), 3 walks and 11 strikeouts in eight games as the Sky Sox closer. Six of Martin's eight outings were scoreless appearances, including each of his previous two outings prior to his call up. In 42 appearances at Double-A and Triple-A in the Red Sox organization in 2013, Martin combined to go 5-3 with a 2.25 ERA (72.0 ip, 18 er), 16 walks and 74 strikeouts. Martin signed with Boston as a non-drafted free agent on March 31, 2011.
Bettis, 24, began the season on the Rockies Opening Day roster for the first time in his career. In 11 games with the Rockies this season, he is 0-1 with a 7.15 ERA (11.1 ip, 9 er), 3 walks and 7 strikeouts. In 27 career Major League games, including eight starts, Bettis is 1-4 with a 5.95 ERA (56.0 ip, 37 er), 23 walks and 37 strikeouts. The 6-foot-1 right-hander was originally drafted by Colorado in the second round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft out of Texas Tech University.
Anderson, 26, was originally placed on the DL on April 14th, retroactive to April 13th. He is now eligible to be reinstated from the disabled list on June 12th. Anderson made three starts for Colorado this season going 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA (15.0 ip, 6 er). On April 13, he left the game in the fourth inning against San Francisco after injuring his finger during his at-bat in the top of the inning. The 6-foot-4 left-handed starter was acquired by the Rockies from the Oakland Athletics on December 10, 2013 in exchange for pitchers Drew Pomeranz and Chris Jensen. He was the Opening Day starter for Oakland in 2013 and has made 87 career appearances, 76 starts, going 26-31 with a 3.81 ERA (465.2 ip, 197 er), 474 hits, 125 walks and 362 strikeouts.
