SAN FRANCISCO -- Though the Giants' season is over, they briefly became a presence at the prestigious Presidents Cup golf tournament at Harding Park.Caddies for the American players, who begin match-play competition against their international counterparts Thursday, wore Giants road jerseys during Wednesday's practice round.
It probably was no coincidence that Tiger Woods' surname was stitched above the No. 24 worn by Giants legend Willie Mays. A Golf Digest blog reported that golfer Steve Stricker's caddy drew the No. 25 that all-time home run king Barry Bonds made famous.
According to Giants officials, United States team captain Fred Couples asked for the jerseys, because he liked the combination of "San Francisco" stitched across the front and the names appearing on the back. Presidents Cup executive director Tom Clark then collaborated with Giants president Larry Baer to complete the project.
The Giants' media relations department said each player will sign the jerseys, which will be auctioned to benefit the First Tee of San Francisco and the Junior Giants program. First Tee offers youths of all backgrounds from ages 6-17 an opportunity to develop, through both golf and character education, skills and values they can apply to all aspects of their lives. Junior Giants, the flagship program of the Giants Community Fund, is a free and non-competitive baseball program for boys and girls ages 5-18.
Besides Woods and Stricker, other American participants include Phil Mickelson, Kenny Perry, Stewart Cink, Jim Furyk, Lucas Glover, Anthony Kim, Sean O'Hair, Zach Johnson, Hunter Mahan and Justin Leonard.
