SAN FRANCISCO -- Shortstop Edgar Renteria hopes to rejoin the starting lineup Wednesday, despite being diagnosed with a mild strain in the AC joint of his left (non-throwing) shoulder and biceps tendinitis. Renteria's shoulder has pained him for about four months, but he didn't undergo an MRI until Tuesday, when he was out of the lineup for the third game in a row. He also has soreness in his right shoulder and will need postseason surgery to have bone chips removed from his right elbow. "He has dealt with this for most of the season," manager Bruce Bochy said. "I think he's handled it well. It kind of shows you what he's about and how tough he is. He doesn't really talk or complain about it. He just goes out there and plays." Entering 2009, Renteria had averaged 146 games per year over his 12 full Major League seasons. Predictably, he has pushed himself to play through the pain at times this year. "It's a hard call because I would like to play no matter what," said Renteria, who's batting .252 with five home runs and 48 RBIs in 123 games. Bochy said that Renteria, who signed a two-year, $18.5 million contract before this season, was fit enough to play Tuesday. But Bochy stuck with the same lineup that generated Monday's 9-1 victory over Colorado. Bochy indicated that Renteria will return to action Wednesday and, with left-hander Jorge De La Rosa scheduled to pitch for Colorado, Juan Uribe and Pablo Sandoval will move back to third and first base, respectively.Chris Haft is a reporter for MLB.com.
