GIANTS (SS) 10, A'S (SS) 1
at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Sunday, March 8

Giants at the plate: Having homered in each of their first 11 games, the Giants maintained their streak as Bengie Molina led off the second inning with his first spring homer. Fred Lewis doubled home two runs in the third before tripling and scoring in the fifth. Randy Winn interrupted his 1-for-23 skid with a first-inning infield single. Rookie Matt Downs went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run, eighth-inning homer.

A's at the plate: Eric Patterson tripled to open the fifth inning and scored on Aaron Cunningham's sacrifice fly. Ryan Sweeney collected two hits to raise his spring average to .545.

Giants on the mound: Randy Johnson performed efficiently, working 3 1/3 shutout innings while allowing three hits and striking out three. His Cactus League ERA stands at 1.08. Right-hander Francis Beltran, a non-roster invitee, worked two scoreless innings.

A's on the mound: Starter Dana Eveland lasted three innings and surrendered three runs (one earned) to lift his ERA to 1.29. Jared Lansford allowed a sixth-inning run while his father, Giants hitting coach Carney Lansford, avoided the stress by monitoring the split-squad game in Tempe.

Cactus League records: Giants 5-8; A's 7-4-1

Up next: Left-hander Barry Zito, who has fared poorly against Milwaukee, will face the Brewers in Scottsdale on Monday at 1:05 p.m. PT. Maybe the regular season has no bearing on the Cactus League, and vice-versa. But Zito's 1-3 with a 6.85 ERA lifetime against the Brewers, and has told reporters that he's bent on reversing those fortunes. Milwaukee left-hander Manny Parra will oppose Zito.

The A's will confront their chief American League West rival, the Los Angeles Angels. Oakland's Dallas Braden will start against Los Angeles' Joe Saunders in another matchup of left-handers.
