ATLANTA -- Manager Bruce Bochy proved to be a man of his word Monday. Before the Giants began their series against the Atlanta Braves last Friday, Bochy said that he would rest Randy Winn at some point during the four-game set to refresh him. But Winn maintained his hot hitting, going 4-for-4 on Friday, 2-for-4 on Saturday and 1-for-3 with a triple on Sunday. Still, when Monday's lineup was posted, Winn wasn't in it.
"I talked to Randy yesterday. He admitted he could use a break," Bochy said.Winn began Monday ranked second in the National League with a .444 average (28-for-63) in August, trailing only Houston's Ty Wigginton (.473). He also led the Giants with 118 games played. Winn hadn't sat out an entire game since July 13 at Chicago, the last game before the All-Star break. Since then, Winn had played in 28 consecutive games, starting all of them. To fill Winn's vacancy, Fred Lewis made his second start of the season in right field. He hadn't played there since April 7, the Giants' home opener. Bochy also figured that Bengie Molina needed rest after catching the first three games and started Pablo Sandoval behind the plate instead. Molina's still on pace to appear in a career-high 145 games.
