Cain to start first game after break
Sanchez, Lincecum, Zito, Correia follow in realigned rotation
CHICAGO -- Matt Cain, not All-Star right-hander Tim Lincecum, will move to the front of the Giants' starting rotation following the All-Star break, manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday.Cain will start Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers, followed by left-hander Jonathan Sanchez on Saturday and Lincecum on Sunday. After Monday's scheduled off-day, left-hander Barry Zito and right-hander Kevin Correia will pitch Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively, against the Washington Nationals. Bochy explained that he wanted to spare Lincecum undue stress on his arm. This differs from the approach the Giants took before their current trip, when Bochy capitalized on last Monday's scheduled off-day to give Lincecum an additional start. "This is a time you'd like to give him some extra days [off], and I think he could use them," Bochy said. Entering Sunday, Lincecum owned a 4.65 ERA in his previous five starts, compared with 1.99 in 14 outings before that. Bochy also doesn't know whether Lincecum will appear in Tuesday's All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium. Were Lincecum to pitch in the Midsummer Classic, he'd still receive his regular four days' rest before confronting Milwaukee.
