GIANTS 11, ROCKIES 7
at Scottsdale, Ariz.
Friday, March 16

Rockies at the plate: Willy Taveras fulfilled his leadoff duties by reaching base and scoring in each of his first two plate appearances. John Mabry contributed a fifth-inning home run and Jeff Baker drilled a two-run, opposite-field homer to right field in the seventh, capping a four-RBI afternoon.

Giants at the plate: Three two-out hits fueled the Giants' six-run second inning: Randy Winn's bases-loaded single, Omar Vizquel's bases-loaded triple and Barry Bonds' fourth Cactus League homer (his second in two days). Winn also homered in the first inning and doubled in the fourth.

Rockies on the mound: Byung-Hyun Kim did nothing to help his trade value by yielding eight runs in 4 2/3 innings. Matt Herges worked 1 1/3 innings and remained unscored upon in Cactus League activity.

Giants on the mound: Matt Cain improved marginally on his 11.42 ERA entering the game, allowing four runs (two earned) in four innings to trim his ERA to 9.24. Closer candidates Brian Wilson and Armando Benitez pitched scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth, respectively.

Cactus League records: Rockies, 9-7-1; Giants, 11-8.

Up next: The home-and-home series continues Saturday as the Rockies entertain the Giants in Tucson, Ariz. Aaron Cook is expected to start for Colorado against San Francisco counterpart Brad Hennessey.
