Giants happy with draft picks
By Josh Rawitch / MLB.com

Giants' round-by-round picks

SAN FRANCISCO -- The beauty of the Major League Draft is that when first-round pick Matt Cain reports to low level A-ball this summer, he'll be right alongside guys like catcher Robert Davis, the Giants' 50th selection, who could very well be his battery mate.

Sure, the labels will exist, but assuming San Francisco signs both players, their performances are what will dictate their speed to the Major Leagues, as is the case with all 50 picks in the recently completed First-Year Player Draft.

Among the notable draftees on Day Two is a trio of players from Southwest Missouri State, including right-hander Matt Palmer, southpaw Andrew Jefferson and outfielder Dant'e Brinkley, all of whom were scouted by Todd Thomas.

"The second day a lot of weird stuff happens," said Vice President, Player Personnel, Dick Tidrow. "It's not normal (to draft three teammates). They just seemed to fit in the round that was up there and one of them was a guy that was passed over until late in the draft."

That is Brinkley, a 5-foot, 10-inch player whose body has been compared to Marquis Grissom. But the three Bears were not the only teammates drafted. Two players from Greenbrier High School in Georgia were taken by the Giants, as was a duo of University of Virginia players that were picked in the 36th and 37th round. The first of those two picks, outfielder David Stone, is the great-grandson of former Pirates and Indians pitcher Grank Sixx.

In the 26th round, the Giants got David Rierson from the University of Arizona, a right-handed pitcher that attended the same high school as Paul Konerko of the White Sox.

All told, the Giants selected 32 pitchers in the two days, 22 of which came from the college ranks.

"We're always trying to get pitching," said Tidrow. "We can't function without it, so we try and go out and get it."
