Pat Gallagher to leave San Francisco Giants05/26/2009 6:51 PM ET

SAN FRANCISCO -- The San Francisco Giants today announced that long-time Giants executive Pat Gallagher will leave the organization on June 30 to pursue other professional opportunities.
"It is with a heavy heart that we bid farewell to Pat," said Giants President Larry Baer. "For more than 32 years, he helped guide the organization with his mix of passion, savvy, showmanship, sense of humor and, above all, personal touch. Through the acute challenges of marketing Candlestick Park, the interrupted 1989 World Series, a near-relocation and an ownership change, the "re-launch" of the Giants in 1993, and his major role in the creation of the ballpark, Pat has been the constant-a trusted, loyal and vital leader of the San Francisco Giants. More importantly, he has been a friend and a mentor to many of us who share his passion for the Giants and the community."
"When I joined the Giants in November of 1976 as the team's first Director of Marketing, little did I know what adventures would be around the bend. The front office had 23 people, box seats were $5, beer was a buck and Herb Caen was a must read every weekday and Sunday morning," said Gallagher. "It has been my honor and privilege to be a member of the Giants Family during this time. I loved the roller coaster ride that has carried me to where we are today: a well-respected organization that always tries to do the right thing, playing in a magical ballpark nobody believed would ever happen in a City not originally considered a "baseball town.
"I will certainly miss coming to the ballpark everyday, however the timing is right for me personally and professionally to take a different path and I'm excited about where it may lead," continued Gallagher.
Gallagher, an early pioneer of sports marketing and a driving force in changing the way Major League Baseball marketed itself to fans, came to the Giants in 1976, shortly after Bob Lurie saved the franchise from moving to Toronto.
For more than 20 years, Gallagher served as the senior vice president for business operations, overseeing various aspects of the non-baseball business for the club, including advertising, promotions, public relations, sales and marketing, ballpark operations and community relations. Gallagher was credited with a number of innovative marketing campaign and initiatives, including the "Croix de Candlestick" reward for fans braving extra inning night games at the 'Stick, the anti-mascot Crazy Crab and the performance of the Great Wallenda -who walked on a tight rope suspended from the foul poles between a double header at Candlestick Park in 1977.
He also played a lead role in the development of AT&T Park. Specifically, he oversaw the creation and implementation of the new ballpark's marketing plan, charter seat program, secondary ticket market, naming rights and corporate sponsorship programs.
In 2000, Gallagher became president of Giants Enterprises, a subsidiary of the Giants which he created to develop non-baseball ventures and business opportunities for the company. Giants Enterprises has been recognized as an industry leader for unique special event production. Over the past nine years, Giants Enterprises has produced more than 1,000 public and private events, including concerts with the Rolling Stones, Dave Matthews Band, Bruce Springsteen, Green Day and regular performances by Cirque du Soleil. Under Gallagher's leadership, AT&T Park was named "Venue of the Year" in 2007 by Sports Business Journal.
Gallagher also serves as the chairman of the San Francisco Visitors and Convention Bureau, chairman of San Francisco's Tourism Improvement District and is a board member of the California Chamber of Commerce and the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
