  • Kammie on First: Baseball's Dottie Kamenshek

    Sunday, May 17 - 11:00a - 12:30p

Author Michelle Houts will discuss and sign copies of her book, Kammie on First: Baseball's Dottie Kamenshek, on Sunday, May 17 from 11:00 - 12:30 in the Reds Hall of Fame Theater. Joining Michelle will be All-American Girls Professional Baseball League veteran Katie Horstman who will talk about her experiences playing in the league that inspired the film A League of Their Own. The event is free with museum admission. Copies of the book will be available for sale in the Hall of Fame Gift Shop.

    About the Author:
Award-winning author Michelle Houts lives on a family farm in Ohio. As a young girl, she remembers listening to Cincinnati Reds games on radio with her father. After three successful middle-grade fiction novels, Houts wrote her first biography for young readers, Kammie on First: Baseball's Dottie Kamenshek.

    About the Book:
The book tells the story of Dorothy Kamenshek, a Cincinnati native, who in 1943 joined the Rockford Peaches and became one of the best players in All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. Dottie's leadership and career contributed to the creation of Geena Davis's character, Dottie Hinson, in the hit film A League of Their Own.

    About Katie Horstman:
Minster, OH native Katie Horstman played in All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1951 through the league's last season of operation in 1954. She spent most of her career with the Fort Wayne Daisies. Overall, she ranks 6th in league history in career batting average and 11th in home runs. An All-Star in 1953, Horstman was one of the league's most versatile players, excelling at multiple positions as well as on the mound where she compiled a lifetime record of 29-11 with a 2.50 ERA. In what proved to be the AAGPBL's last season in 1954, Horstman helped lead the Daisies to the league's regular season championship and participated in the league's last game, an 8-5 victory by Kalamazoo over Fort Wayne in the decisive fifth game of the AAGPBL Series.
