What is the High School Challenge?

The Flying Pig Marathon and The Reds Community Fund have joined teams to offer this exciting initiative for your school. The High School Challenge is a great opportunity to help your students learn and develop healthy habits while supporting your school. The goal of the program is to encourage and teach students ages 13-18 years old to improve their physical fitness and give back to the community by volunteering and fundraising for their school. Students will train to complete the Flying Pig 5K and the Redlegs Run 5K, making it a “Double Play”!

Do the students have to participate in the “Double Play”?

The short answer is, no. The program is available to schools interested in participating in one or the other event. However, to be eligible for the top prizes you must participate in both the Flying Pig 5K and the Redlegs Run 5K. Healthy habits are developed over an extended period of time and we believe that staying committed to training, service, and fundraising will benefit the student long after they complete the High School Challenge.

Is there a High School Challenge winner?

Yes! Each school will earn a score based on participation, community service and fundraising. The score of each school will be calculated by a weighted scale. 60% of the score will be based on student participation (as a percentage of total enrollment). 30% of the score will be based on community service (# of hours of service compared to other schools based on participants). The final 10% of the score will be based on fundraising (money raised compared to other schools based on participants). Note, participation is the most important factor, not speed. Students participating in the High School Challenge are eligible for Age Group Awards in each of the events.

What does the winner receive?

Prizes for the top school includes a traveling trophy, two $1,500 scholarships, a Reds experience and a live broadcast from your school by WLWT-TV’s morning meteorologist, Randi Rico. Not to mention bragging rights for the year!

Who gets the fundraising money?

YOUR SCHOOL! 100% of the money raised is for the benefit of your school. The High School Challenge participants can “adopt” a campus project or the money can be used to update facilities or equipment…technology lab, gym equipment, field trip, school dances, etc. The money could also be donated to the school’s charitable cause.

Who should be our School Coordinator?

The School Coordinator can be anyone directly connected with the school. An administrator, teacher, nurse, parent or coach would make a good coordinator. The role of the coordinator is to recruit students and promote the program throughout the school. Coordinators will also be responsible for planning group training sessions, relaying important program information and supporting students in their training, volunteering and fundraising efforts. You could also have a Student Ambassador (1 per school or 1 per grade level) to assist the Coordinator.

When are the events?

The Flying Pig 5K is Saturday May 4, 2013.

The Redlegs Run 5K is Saturday June 1, 2013.

How long is a 5K?

The 5K is 3.1 miles. Participants of the High School Challenge can compete in either the 5K or 10K (6.2 miles). We imagine the majority of students will participate in the 5K events.

Do the students have to run the entire distance?

No, students can use any combination of walking, jogging or running to cover the distance.

How much does the program cost?

Participants will receive a training program and healthy living tips for FREE! There will be Flying Pig and Reds giveaway items distributed throughout the program. Other running-related and healthy living items will also be handed out. Each participant is responsible for the cost of the event; the special discounted prices for High School Challenge participants are: Flying Pig 5K is $25, the 10K is $30 and the Redlegs Run 5K is $30, the 10K is $40.
